Working Together to Overcome
Hate and Antisemitism

Now more than ever in our lifetime, we need to work together to overcome hate and antisemitism. In the U.S., violent attacks are escalating at alarming proportions. In a six-week period, there were three widely-publicized attacks against Jews - the firebombing of the PA Governor's mansion on Passover; the deadly shooting of two young Israeli Embassy staffers in D.C., as they exited a Middle East peace event; and the molotov-cocktail attack against peaceful supporters of the October 7 hostages in Boulder, CO, with 12 injured, including a Holocaust survivor.

Nationwide, antisemitic incidents have increased 893%, from 2015 to 2024, with 9,354 incidents reported to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in 2024.

These Stats Impact
All of Us

  • Every 56 minutes in the U.S., a Jewish individual is harassed or attacked, or a synagogue or home gets vandalized.

  • According to the FBI, 68% of religiously-motivated hate crimes are against Jews, who are only 2.4% of the population. Crimes are increasing in all categories - race and ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and disability.

  • The FBI noted that for the second year in a row, more than 1 in 5 of any type of hate crime is now motivated by anti-LGBTQ+ bias. There were 2,402 incidents relating to a victim’s sexual orientation recorded in 2023, up from 1,947 the year before; and 547 incidents relating to a victim’s gender identity, compared with 469 the year before.

  • Hate crimes and antisemitism are impacting children at a startling rate, including bullying, harassment, physical threats, and swastikas scrawled on and in our local schools.

Security Network

Our Federation is a vital part of a robust security infrastructure, including the regional Jewish Security Alliance, JCRC, UJA New York, the ADL and 10 regional Federations, among others - sharing intel, personnel and training, 24/7.

We work with:

  • Local police, the Rockland Sheriff and District Attorney, and State and Federal agencies.

  • Local volunteer organizations, such as Hatzalah, Chaverim, and others to maximize our reach.

Security Training

In July, 2022, we launched a countywide security volunteer training program, and we are expanding its depth and breadth for all Jewish institutions and community partners at risk. Several survivors of violent antisemitic attacks in the US say their survival was due in part to this kind of training.

We provide:

  • Guidance to more than 250 local Jewish organizations and the training of nearly 2000 volunteers. We offer grant advice, facility assessments, Stop the Bleed, Active Threat, Greeter training and more. Our goal is to reach 400 organizations and 4000 volunteers within the next 3 years!

  • Security alerts and security seminars for organizations in our network, including vulnerable partners beyond the Jewish community. Our goal is to double the number of participating organizations.

  • Training and guidance on situational awareness, paramount during these threatening times: highlighting personal and institutional safety, the current threat environment, and resources available to counter it.

Education

Our work and goals in the realm of education cover a broad spectrum, including:

  • Increasing support for programs provided by the Holocaust Museum & Center for Tolerance and Education in Rockland (HMCTE); Holocaust education is mandated under NY State law.

  • Collaborating with school superintendents and boards of education on proactively and reactively dealing with hate and antisemitism.

  • Educating local synagogues and Jewish groups, as well as civil society, on the troubling confluence of antisemitism and anti-Zionism since October 7.

  • Meeting with other faith communities and vulnerable populations to find common ground and share best practices.

Advocacy

The Jewish Federation & Foundation of Rockland County reaches out for the community by:

  • Working with the NYS Attorney General's office of Civil Rights to address hate and antisemitism on social media.

  • Representing the community on the Rockland County Human Rights Commission and the NYS Division of Human Rights Hate & Bias Prevention Council.

  • Providing greater opportunities for community members to engage with elected officials at all levels of government.

  • Advocating to Congress for Non-Profit Security Grant Funding and full implementation of the Jabara-Heyer NO Hate Act.

Community Action

  • At rallies, marches, celebrations, commemorations and other public programs, we have shared our commitment to overcome hate with over 15,000 Rocklanders since late 2023 alone.

  • We’ve stood together at the County Courthouse, marched in Manhattan, rallied in Washington DC, and gathered from Nyack to Ramapo. Our goal is to reach tens of thousands more through community action and education.
