Federation Supports Recovery Efforts in the Philippines

After Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines on November 11, the Jewish Federation of Rockland County called on members of our community to donate funds desperately needed for relief efforts. We channeled donations directly to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), our partner agency that is equipped to respond to natural disasters. Rockland residents brought checks to our offices and donated generously online. Rockland Jewish Family Service and JCC Rockland appealed to their members and supporters as well, who in turn contributed to Federation’s collection.

In a November 23 Philippines relief update, the JDC reported that our help is already making a difference to so many devastated by Typhoon Haiyan. Thanks to the generosity of donors, the JDC is delivering food and shelter as well as personal hygiene and medical supplies. They are ensuring that the supplies are being distributed to those in need and are also treating typhoon survivors through medical equipment and supplies at the Israel Defense Forces Field Hospital.

JDC’s team of disaster relief and development experts — including emergency medical personnel — are on the ground in the disaster zone not only to tend to the immediate needs of victims but to lay the groundwork for long-term, sustainable recovery efforts. Donations are still needed to support the JDC’s work in the Philippines, and a link to Federation’s secure online donation page can be found on the homepage of our website, www.jewishrockland.org.
