Grants at Work: Memories to Last a Lifetime

Many of us have fond memories of summer camp, and the accomplished athletes among us may have proud memories from participating in JCC Maccabi Games as well. Here in Rockland County, JCC Rockland has been running summer camps for decades, and the JCC Maccabi Games have been taking place across North America since 1982.

Today, hundreds of children attend JCC Rockland camp programs, and talented youth athletes from our community participate on JCC Rockland’s Maccabi teams as well. Federation is proud to support these important programs through grants to JCC Rockland, helping to insure wonderful and memorable experiences for children in our community.

The JCC Maccabi Games is a week-long athletic event where delegations from throughout North America, Europe and Israel test their physical skills while learning the values of teamwork, sportsmanship and community. JCC Rockland’s teams have been practicing for months in preparation for the 2016 Maccabi Games, to be held August 7-12 in Stamford, CT. The Junior Maccabi Games (for 11- and 12-year-olds) were held on May 15 in Cherry Hill, NJ and the Mini Maccabi Games (for children ages 9-10) were held at JCC Rockland on May 22. At all levels and for all ages, the Games cultivate an appreciation of Jewish values and a connection to the Jewish community, enriching participants’ Jewish identities while promoting health and well-being. The grant that Federation provides helps to offset the expenses associated with JCC Rockland’s participation in the Games.

Federation supports JCC Rockland summer camps through scholarships to assist families who seek a safe Jewish environment for their children during the summer. According to Eliza Millman, COO of JCC Rockland, “Over the past few years we have seen a rise in the need for financial assistance for our camp programs. Camps help keep families connected to the Jewish community all year long, so we want to provide as much aid as we can.”

JCC Rockland offers a number of camp options including Camp J-Land, Camp Discover and Camp Yomi, and nearly 15% of all camp families request and receive financial aid.

The Jewish Federation & Foundation of Rockland County is proud to partner with JCC Rockland in support of these exciting, identity-building youth programs. JCC Rockland camps are open to enrollment throughout the summer; learn more at www.jccrockland.org/camp
