Jerome (Jerry) Chazen, a beacon of leadership and wisdom, passed away Sunday, February 6th at the age of 94. Jerry's impact on the Rockland community can be seen in the institutions we depend on every day- like the Rockland Jewish Community Center, the Center for Safety and Change, and the Jewish Federation & Foundation of Rockland County, among many others - and in the priorities met and challenges overcome over the last five decades. Jerry and Simona Chazen established a standard of generosity that we are all called to emulate to honor his life and legacy. We mourn, and we comfort Simona, Kathy, Louise, David and their families.
May the Almighty comfort all of them among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. Many pages will be written about Jerry's business acumen, his commitment to inspiring generations of Business School graduates at Columbia University, his philanthropic leadership at New York institutions including the 92nd street Y, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Museum of Art and Design. He will be remembered for serving his country in the Navy during the Second World War; for founding Liz Claiborne and influencing entrepreneurs for decades; and for sharing his hard earned business experience with all who sought his advice. Here in Rockland, Jerry will be remembered for his sage advice and the services, programs, classes, and agencies which his philanthropy shaped.
When our new CEO Ari Rosenblum came on board a few short months ago, we had an opportunity to speak at length with Jerry. He conveyed to us his belief that the Federation he so avidly supported needed to play the central role in building bridges both within and beyond our Jewish community. In fact he was certain that in building those bridges between all of us-all of our agencies, all of our congregations, all of our families-we could face the future with confidence, and that in building the future together we would be greater than the sum of our individual parts.
As we pick up the standard Jerry and Simona so steadily carried over these many years, let's commit ourselves to the ideals of generosity and service that energized him.
May his memory be a blessing.
