Building Bridges to Israel: My Personal Mission Experience

Since October 7, we have been reminded that being Jewish is about more than faith. It’s about responsibility, unity, and perseverance. Even in the face of unimaginable tragedy, we come together to rebuild, heal, and stand strong. This week’s Parsha, Terumah, speaks to the concept of voluntary contribution—Terumah—and the importance of dedicating what we can to a higher purpose. I find a powerful parallel between the work of building the Tabernacle in the Parsha and my own efforts to work with and strengthen our community.

Strengthening Bonds and Building Bridges was the name of the mission I recently joined, organized for JCC Executives throughout New York. This mission was an opportunity to support Israel in ways that go beyond words—through tangible, meaningful contributions. It was also the second mission I have had the privilege to join since October 7.

I have visited Israel many times before, with friends, family, and colleagues, but this most recent visit was different. For the first time, I felt a sense of fear—not because Israel is a country at war, but because I feared that it might not be the same Israel I know and love. Walking through the streets, I felt a mix of emotions: sorrow, anger, but also an undeniable sense of vitality and passion. Everywhere I went, there were reminders of what’s at stake—the price Israel pays to protect its people and its sovereignty.

Israel is not just a state; it is the spiritual and cultural heart of the Jewish people. Its survival and prosperity are inextricably linked to our shared history, our collective identity, and our future. At this critical time, Israel’s strength is our strength. Supporting Israel, especially in times of challenge, is more than an act of solidarity—it's an affirmation of our shared commitment to justice, democracy, and freedom. When we stand with Israel, we reinforce the values that unite Jewish communities around the world.

There are countless ways to show support for Israel—whether by proudly wearing a Jewish star, displaying an Israeli flag, or donating money to causes that help our Jewish state. But there is something uniquely powerful about participating in a mission to Israel. Whether it’s engaging in a gardening project to create a healing space in the Gaza Envelope, meeting the families of hostages tragically killed by Hamas, or listening to an IDF Commander speak passionately about our collective journey, the experience leaves an indelible mark. Every moment served as a reminder of our shared values, mission, and the strength that drives us to pursue Tikkun Olam—the healing of the world.

Israel’s resilience and unwavering commitment to its people are something we must continue to support. It is through these missions that we can directly contribute to the future of our Jewish homeland and deepen our bond with the land of Israel. When we visit, we not only show our solidarity but also experience firsthand the challenges and triumphs that define Israel’s existence.

The Jewish Federation and Foundation of Rockland County is planning a mission to Israel on June 22-26, 2025. I urge you to consider participating in this incredible opportunity and for more information, you can email info@jewishrockland.org. There is no greater way to show solidarity with Israel than by experiencing it firsthand, standing together with our brothers and sisters, and contributing to the future of our Jewish homeland.
